Recurring charge guide
Recurring charge still appearing? Build a paper trail before the next one.
A recurring charge can come from a subscription, trial conversion, installment, membership, add-on, or merchant name you do not recognize. Identify the agreement and cancellation status before choosing the next step.
Important: This guide is general information, not legal, medical, insurance, financial, or other professional advice. Verify deadlines, rights, and decisions with the company or a qualified professional.
A line-by-line method
Work through the document in this order.
Identify the merchant
The card descriptor may differ from the product name. Search the receipt, app-store history, and email before assuming the charge is unauthorized.
Find the renewal rule
Check whether the agreement renews monthly, annually, after a trial, or for a fixed installment period.
Use the required cancellation route
Some purchases are managed by Apple or another platform; others require the provider's account page or support process.
Save proof
Keep confirmation numbers, timestamps, emails, screenshots, and the stated effective date. Do not rely only on a disappearing button.
Separate cancellation from refund
Stopping future renewal does not always reverse a completed charge. Ask about both outcomes explicitly.
Questions to ask
Get a specific answer.
- What product or account is connected to this descriptor?
- When did I agree, and what renewal terms applied?
- What is the effective cancellation date?
- Does a cancellation fee apply, and where was it disclosed?
- Will the company confirm no future charges in writing?
Common questions
Questions worth answering.
Does deleting an app cancel its subscription?
Usually no. Subscriptions must be canceled through the platform or provider that manages billing. Verify the status and effective date.
Is canceling the same as getting a refund?
No. Cancellation generally affects future renewal, while a refund concerns a completed charge. The provider or platform rules determine eligibility.
What if I truly do not recognize the charge?
Contact the merchant or billing platform when identifiable and promptly contact your payment provider if you believe the charge is unauthorized. Follow its fraud-reporting instructions and deadlines.
